  • ABOUT US | Shepherdofthehills

GLORIFY | GROW | GO Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church has a long, proud history of serving the community of Duluth. Through the dedication of our leadership, pastors and volunteers, we are committed to the teachings of Jesus Christ, and are here to spread His message. We are open to everyone of all ages and backgrounds, and strive to lead all who worship with us towards a deeper love for God. OUR BELIEFS ABOUT GOD ABOUT GOD THE FATHER Shepherd of the Hills is a Lutheran Church. This means first and foremost, that our church conforms to the teaching of the Bible. Because Jesus pointed to the Bible as the authority of those who follow him, the things we list below are what we believe as a Christian church hold onto as truth. No matter if you are new to Christianity, haven’t been to church for a while, still learning about the Bible, or a life-long Christian you are welcome at Shepherd of the Hills. God is the creator and ruler of all things. He has existed from eternity. Though there is only one God, he is three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These three persons are equal in power, authority, and majesty. Genesis 1:1-27; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19-20; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14 God the Father's special work was to create the universe in which we live. He made us along with every creature, gave us our bodies and souls, as well as our gifts and abilities. He still daily preserves us by richly and daily providing all that we need for our bodies and lives. Genesis 1:1-2:3 ;Psalm 33:6-9 ;Job 10:10-12 Job 38:36; Psalm 36:6-7;Psalm 145:15-16 ABOUT JESUS CHRIST ABOUT THE BIBLE ABOUT HUMAN BEINGS Jesus Christ is the Son of God the Father from eternity. He became human when he was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. As both full God and full human he lived a life without sin and offered himself as a sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He rose from the dead after three days. He ascended into heaven and will return one day to exercise judgment over all people, living and dead. Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5; John 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14-15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13 The Bible is God's Word to us. It was written by a variety of human authors spanning about 1,500 years, but the words are from the Holy Spirit himself as he "breathed into" the writers. The Bible is the authority that points to Jesus Christ as the only Savior. The Bible as written by the original authors are free of mistakes, errors, or contradictions. 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21; 2 Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105; Psalm 12:6; Proverbs 30:5 People were originally created in the image of God - holy and sinless. Ever since the fall of mankind into sin, this is no longer true. All people are now born with a sinful nature and are unable to find God or please him in any way. The sin we are born with is the source of the sin we commit every day. Sin earns punishment from God, and outside of Jesus there is nothing mankind can do to avert that punishment. Genesis 1:27; Romans 5:12-21; Psalm 51:5; Ephesians 2:1-5; Luke 15; Luke 19:10; John 3:1-21; Romans 12:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 ABOUT SALVATION Salvation is not found within us or through us, we need a Savior. That Savior is Jesus. Jesus lived a perfect life in order to give his righteousness to us as a gift. Jesus died an innocent death to be punished for our sins in our place. Not only has God provided a way for us to be forgiven, but he also provides the faith which brings that forgiveness to us. Salvation as a whole comes to mankind by grace alone, through faith alone, by God alone. Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6; John 15:5-16; Romans 3:20-26; Acts 16:31; Romans 10:17 ABOUT THE CHURCH Shepherd of the Hills is a collection of families and singles who live in the Twin Ports and surrounding areas. Shepherd of the Hills is a member of the (WELS) Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod . The WELS, established 1850, is a Biblically-conservative church body with a passion for God’s Word, education, and missions. With more than 1,200 congregations and 400,000 members, the WELS is the third largest Lutheran church in the U.S. The church body’s congregations also support over 300 elementary schools, over 300 early education programs, and 23 high schools. As well as more than 100 missionaries and more than 200 national workers sharing the gospel worldwide. ABOUT OUR PURPOSE IN LIFE Children of God live to thank him for his acts of love and to magnify his name in the world. First, our purpose to come to faith in God, who have revealed himself to us in his Word and our Savior Jesus Christ. Apart from God, there is no true purpose to our lives. Once God has called us to faith, we live to serve him and obey him, which brings us great blessings. In short, once saved, our purpose is to love God foremost and love our neighbors. Our mission is to tell as many others as we can, through our loving actions and speech, that Jesus is the Savior of all mankind. Acts 17:24-28, John 1:1-18, Psalm 148, Romans 12:1-21, 2 Corinthians 5:14-21, Matthew 28:18-19, Acts 1:8 For more information on what we believe:

  • I'M NEW HERE | Shepherdofthehills

IT'S A JOY TO KNOW YOU ARE VISITING US. B ecause we believe this is what you’re looking for – not our church, but Jesus. MESSAGE FROM PASTOR TIM My life is not perfect, but it is joyful of what Jesus did for me. I know that what he did is for you too. That is the joy I would like to share with you! The message of love and forgiveness is amazing. It has the power to change both your life now as your eternity. Until then, I want to encourage you to check us out in a couple of ways. Take a look through our website to learn more information about Shepherd of the Hills and who we are. Also, go to the Messages page is where you will find our current series’. Listen to them to find out what we mean about the good news of Jesus. The important part, the part worth knowing is what people experience when they connect together, worship together, and support each other around Jesus. So are after you are done looking around, make sure to take time to join us one Sunday and be part of the part that is worth knowing. I look forward to meeting you. God bless! WHAT TO EXPECT Whether you are lifelong Christian, a new believer, or someone just searching for answers our goal is for you to feel welcome and comfortable at Shepherd of the Hills. Because we know that stepping into a church for the first time can be difficult, we hope this will answer some questions you may have. Q. What makes Shepherd of the Hills different from other churches in the Twin Ports? At Shepherd of the Hills, we teach Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. We believe in one Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We hope in this way we are the same as other churches in town. Our prayer and desire, however, is that Shepherd of the Hills will lead the way with preaching and teaching from God's Word. We do this by knowing and caring for one another. We do this as our worship and Bible Studies all focus on the good news of Jesus. We may not be the biggest church in the Duluth area. We just want you to see us as a church that shows our love for God and others. Q. What is worship like We work very hard to make sure worship has something for everyone. You will find some contemporary music and traditional hymns. Our message is geared toward kids, teens, and adults. We offer a children’s message every Sunday, so kids can be engaged and learning the good news of Jesus. We want all ages and all backgrounds to feel comfortable. To do this we have the entire service printed out in a worship folder for you to follow along. Q. Am I supposed to dress up? Only if you would like. We live in a world where too often people are judged by appearance or looks. At Shepherd of the Hills we are happy you are here whether you’re wearing jeans and a t-shirt or a suit or a dress. Because here we can tell you about Jesus and what he has done for you and the impact he makes in your life. Currently with COVID-19 we do request you and your family wear masks while in the building. Q. What makes us a Lutheran church? The name "Lutheran" has been used to describe a broad group of teachings. Much like there are different types of Baptists, Presbyterians, and other groups, there are also different types of Lutherans, which makes answering the question a little difficult. You can find a more in-depth answer to the question here (link to our beliefs). The shorter answer to "What makes Shepherd of the Hills a Lutheran Church?" could be summarized this way: The entire Bible is the Word of God. We are saved only through faith in Jesus. We are saved not by our own works, but by the grace of God. NEXT STEPS Baptism: At Shepherd of the Hills, we follow what Jesus said about baptism in Matthew 28:19: “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” We believe that baptism is a divine and precious sacrament instituted by God and offers the forgiveness of sins, power that produces life change, and eternal salvation. According the Bible, baptism is meant for all ages, including infants. We understand that baptism is God’s gift and will gladly baptize those from our church and community. If you are interested in baptism or have questions regarding baptism, please contact us.. Starting Point Starting Point is an opportunity to dive in and explore the truths of the Bible.
